Canine Influenza Outbreak in the West End
|
There has been an outbreak of canine influenza in the Poconos. It began at a boarding facility and caused a quarantine at the Stroudsburg SPCA.
Influenza was thought to be a mutation from equine influenza at the dog tracks in Florida. There have been sporadic episodes since 1999. However, this is the first outbreak in Monroe County. Influenza may be spread via direct contact, aerosol or may even be transmitted by people's shoes! 10-20% of dogs show no clinical signs. After exposure, the dog will experience a short time of nasal discharge and will then progress to an unrelenting cough for 10-21 days. Medication does not change the course of the viral disease.
About 10% of the patients get seriously ill with pneumonia. Those patients require hospitalization. There is a 1-5% mortality rate.
If your dog is coughing, please call. Do not bring your dog into a veterinary office unannounced, as your dog may make other dogs ill. This is similiar to how doctors treat children with chicken pox (in the car!)

We will be updating the features periodically and will add articles of interest. We have included a links page. These are sites which we have personally visited and think will be helpful. The FAQs section should answer the most basic questions. If you find that you need more information, please contact us via email or telephone. Thanks for visiting!

We have our own blood bank at Creature Comforts, providing quick access to blood in case your pet needs it in an emergency.

Our Blood Donor program was a feature story in the Pocono Record!

Is your pet's breath so bad it brings tears to your eyes? It could have a serious problem!

Due to findings in the latest vaccine research, AAHA has adopted new vaccination guidelines that affect all dog and cat owners. Creature Comforts will be following these new guidelines.
